One of our more popular presentations at our past Emerging Technologies summit was given by Carl Deal. Carl is Vice President, Team Lead with Gartner Executive Programs. He called the presentation, The Impact of Digital and Business: Am I in the Rear View Mirror? What he was really talking about was how to succeed in the era of the Digital Transformation.
Carl had many words of wisdom to share with our group.
It’s ironic, I think, that the most important of the advice was the beginning of his talk and also the same advice he gives every leader he visits with.
Before I share this advice, I’d like to point out that I am writing this article in June of 2017. Carl gave his presentation to us November of 2016.
As I write this note, just this past week Amazon bought Whole Foods. In one day an entire industry was transformed. I had the opportunity to discuss this with a Senior Director from one of the world’s largest grocery chains. He said they believe that the reason for the purchase was the distribution center. Buy online and pick it up at the store. He added, If you are in the grocery business and don’t have a solid online presence, it’s over.
And the advice from Carl? “Get Over Yourself.”
What does Carl mean? He indicated at the beginning of his presentation that he speaks with a number of CEOs of large companies and shares multiple examples of digital disruption. Despite the multiple examples, many of them still say, “That couldn’t happen to me.” He points to numerous companies, like Circuit City, or Kodak or Blockbuster. None of the CEOs of those companies thought they would be hurt by the digital transformation, but we know now they were wrong.
Get over yourself. As Carl points out, the digital transformation is here, and you can’t get away from it.
